BREAKING UP LARGE ESTATES
NEW SOUTH. WALES LEGISLATION. Sydney, Decembor 18. The usual rush of legislation and tho protracted sittings of the Legislative Assembly at the tail-end of the session havo been responsible for scenes v of unseemly disorder and disgraceful recrimination. The Government "gagged" a Bill 1 designed to break up large estates through the Committeo stago in a physically-exhausted House. The Bill provides for tho taking over of the. greater part of a holder's, land in ' cxcliKiigo for long-term' bonds, carrying --li per cent, interest. The Opposition claimed that as - tho bonds' were worth only 06 per cent, of their face value, the proposal meant disaster for the holders, pressure by financial institutions, and throwing much of the land out of occupation—Press Assn.
