FIRE ON THE REMUERA
DAMAGE CONFINED TO No. 5 HOLD. No. .1 hold of the New Zealand Shipping Company's liner liemueni was 11il> senile of an outbreak of fire early on Saturday morning, .which, owing to the promptitude of tho Eire Brigade, was nipped in the bud. The brigade were notified of the firo at 6.-1S o'clock and by 7.15 it had been completely suppressed. The fire was practically confined to the flax, and the fact that the Fire Brigade used as little water as possible saved a great dpal of cargo from being damaged. Tho Hom'uera was lying alongside tho King's Wharf, and No. 5 hold was loaded with llax, wool, driud milk, and case meats, nono of which was shipped at Wellington. The vessel itself was not damaged, and the damage to tho cargo was not extensive. The affected hold was discharged on Saturday morning, and refilled with tlTe cargo that escaped from the of tho fire, and other cargu. The cause'of the outbreak was not ascertainable on Saturday. Tim com' pany's officials incline to tho opinion that it must have been started by a stray spark. s Tho company's agents are boDcfulthat the fire will not delay the Remeura's departure for Southampton and London, which is fixed for to-morrow.
