THE NOVEMBER BONUS
SovoraJ new industrial awards have boo .filed with the Deputy Kegistvar of tho Arbitration Court ut Wellington. ■ The Wellington wholesale merchants employees' award ombodies thu recommendations of tho Conciliation Council. The principal questions left to tlho Court were an to hours of work, wages, and tho terms of the award. "These have been Bettled by the Court," states a memorandum attached to the award, "ihe hours of work and tho wages being brought into conformity with tliosD fixed by the Court in other districts for narohouse employees, no substantial difference being shown bet.ween the workers last-named and thoso employed by the parties cited in this.dispute. The Court lias added tho November bonus in terms of tho recent pronouncement. The employers cited were Kempthorne, Prosser.and Co., Ltd.. Shnrland and Co., Ltd., and Young a Chemical Co. The award is to oper.v.o from December 20, 1920, to December 20, 1922. Tho bonus clause is as follows:— "The minimum rates prescribed shall be increased by the following bonuses: lo all workers in their first, second, third, fourth, and fifth years of service, Gs. per week; and after their fifth year of service, 13s. per week." , The Court's memorandum m the award of the Wellington retail grocers' assistants (countrv section) is as follows:— "This award embodies the recommendations of tho Conciliation Council, which the parties agreed to accept; but the Court has added the November bonus in ifcrms of tho recent pronouncement, nnd nd alteration in the clnuso relating to hours has been rendered necessary by the provisions of the Shops and Offices Amendment Act, 1920." The: clause relating. % bonuses is as follows-.— lne minimum ratos of wages prescribed shall be increased by the amounts of tho following bonuses respectively:—To workers up to i'ho age of twenty-ono' years, a bonus of ss. per week as from October 1, 1920, which bonus shall be increased to Gs. per week as from November 1, 1920; to workers ovor tho ago of twenty-one years, a bonus of ss. per week as from October 1. 1920, which bonus shall be increased to Bs. por week as from November 1. 1920." So far as it relates to wages, tho award is retrospective to October 4, 1920: The award of The Wellington femalo printers' assistants embodies tho recommendations of the Conciliation Council, which the parties agreed to accept. «i this case the bonus claiSe, (whio.h was part of the agreement between ihe partios) reads: "In addition to tho rates of wages prescribed there shall be paid a cost-of-living bonus of Gs. per week, this bonus to be deemed full provision for the increase in the cost of living for "period ended September 30, 1920. So Far as it relates to wages, the award operates as from October 4, 1920. "This award," 'states the Court m a memorandum attached to the award of the gardeners in the employ of the Wellington City Council and tho Petone Borough Council, "embodies tdie recommendations of the Conciliation Council; hut the Court . has added the November bonus." The bonus clnuso relating to "adults.is as follows: 'The minimum rates of wages prescribed shall be increased by the. following bonuses-.-To hourly workers. 3Jd. per hour; to -weekly workers, Bs.'pe/week." Regarding the bonus for youths, the award states: "The mini, mum rates prescribed for youths Bbnll bo increased by a bonus of Is. per week. .So far,as it relates to wages, the award is retrospective to November 1 last... ; The Wellington brewers, bottlers, hot-tte-washers, and aerated water employees award embodies the recommendations of the Conciliation Council, and tho November bonus-is added. The bonus clause reads: "The minimum rates prescribed ohall bo increased by a bonus of 10s. per week as from October 1, 1920, which bonus shall! bo increased .to 135.. per week as from November .1, ; 1920.', -, So far as wages are concerned, the award operates from October 1, 1920.
