Having previously pleaded guilty at the Old Bailey, Herbert Souster, a clerk, was brought up for sentence on charges of obtaining cheques by falso pretences, and falsification of the books of his employers. Messrs. Cohen, Laming nnd Ho.ire, stock-brokers. It was alleged that he entered into a number of transactions' on behalf of two of his relatives. Shares were bought, for them and were represented by him to have been sold at a higher price than _ they really were. In consequence the -firm suffered a loss amounting to something like JUWOO. Kestitutiop had been made to the extent of over iGOOO. On his behalf it was snid that lie had a magnificent war record, lie gained the D.C.M., was wounded three times, and lost an arm. His discharge papers were marked "a very brave man." One of the partners of the firm had made a strong and touching appeal, saying such a brave man was cheap at .£BOOO. Souster had been in custody for four months. It was a serious fraud, said tho recorder, but in all the circumstances ho felt he was justified in passing a sentence of six weeks and ono day, vhicb, would mean immediate discharge.
