FORMAL PROTEST REGARDING AN OMISSION. New York, December 11. It is reported in diplomatic circles that Chile and Japan are verging on an incident! of considerable gravity, following upon a formal protest from Japan becauso she was not invited to attend the Magellan Straits celebration. Tho protest was staled to be because of Japan's importance in lllie Pacific. She feels the slight keenly, especially as two other naval Powers—Britain and the United States—had been invited' to eommemorato the discovery of the Straits.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
