NOTES AND COMMENTS
By Glbncoe. The Dannevirko Meeting will be held on Wednesday. Patrons travelling by, rail to tho meeting can obtain excursion, fares from Pnlmerston North, Napier, and intervening stations. Tho locally-owned two-year-old, Sunny Vale, is to make his first appearance under silk at the Marten Meeting on New Year's Day. Though so far she has not shown any partiality to R' distance, tho attempt to convert 80-Peen into, a stayer, has- not been abandoned, and she has'been en-, tercd for the Marten Clip. . Recently J. Coyle tried the disappointing Kipling over a couple of fences, and those who saw the Demosthenes gelding, perform, declare that no horse could Have- jumped better. If ho takes kindly to jumping he should 'bo very useful in, hack hurdle events. Generally anything that Mr. James Bull races has a jumping strain in its, pedigree, and whether this is so or not, his horses are always given a chanceto learn to jump. The latest aspirant for hurdle honours from tho stable/ in question js Ngata, who has been entered lor tho jumping events at Marten, is a big, strong gelding that should do well as a jumper, moro especially us m the past Jig hag shown a partiality tor the .60ft going. ' 'Mr. G. Hume's Australian purchase. Lord Usk, by the imported Blankney II from Lady Usk, was given his first race for his new owner at Woodville ■ last week, and with A. J. M'Fliim m tho saddle Le finished nloso up to the placed division in the Trial Stakes. Rangiata, who carries tho colours ot a well-known Pnlmerston North spurtsman, has been a great disappointment so far. Tho brown niare gallops as wclL as the first-class performers in private, but with tho colours up sho regularly fails. Sho seems to be.on the improve, and at Feilding van her best race to date, though sho did not got into a The Riccarton-trained Fnbrinade has', been nominated for the hack sprint, ovents at tho Marten Meeting. Fabrinade showed promising form early in tlia season and won u race at Ashburton, .- but has since failed regularly. Owners aro .reminded that acceptance* for the first day's handicaps at the Manawntu Meeting closo to-morrow night. North Island owners who intend doingtho West Const meetings at Christmas should bear in mind that entries for ths Reofton Meeting closo on Thursday, and for the Grevmoutli Meeting on Saturday. Acceptances for the Auckland Meeting aro duo on Friday next. Ariowsmith continues to do wonderlui gallops at Riccarton. On Saturday morning, by himself, he jumped oft at tlio three-furlong peg, and ran the first two furlongs in 23 2-ssee., the three iurlongs in 35 l-ssec„ four furlongs in 4< 4-ssec., and the five furlongs in luiiu. He went on another furlong, pulling• up, registering linin. 13 2-ssec. *or tho sis iurlongs. It was a great performance, con. sidering the heavy track conditions. _ • In addition to riding First Salute in, the Auckland Clip, tho Sydney horseman, K Bracken, will take tho mounts on; some of Mr. G. L. Stead's horses. ..The form of Hyttns in the hurdlo; events at the Woodville Meeting did not altogether pleaso his owner, and his im-, mediate engagements will not includo any , jumping races. . 'Considering that sho has 7st. I.llb. in ttu, Railway Handicap at Ellerelie,. against Bst. 91b. in the Fitzherbert Handicap at Awapuni, the Hastings-owned Statuette will probably be raced at the termer meeting. The fact that she has . not been nominated at tho Marion or. Hastings Meetings would also point to . the probabilities of her racing at Ellers- ; tie. '
