MAGISTRATE'S COURT
Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., presided at tho Magistrate's Court on Saturday, and dealt with the police ca6es. Edward Haley, a fireman, was fined 55., in default 24 hours' imprisonment, for drunkenness, and feft-, discharging offensive matter on the street in breach of the by-laws he/was fined 405., the.alternative boing seven days' imprisonment John Lacey Crowley, who was.convioted.of drunkenness for the third time'in six months, was fined 205., in default three days' imprisonment. For committing a breach, of his prohibition, order he was fined a further 205., and for using indecent language in a tramoar he waJ sent to prison for fourteen days. A Maori named Jim Waorea (for whom Mr. W. G. Mellish appeared) was charged with stealing an overcoat, the property of Joha Mowatt. The acou6ed and another man were seen, in a corridor where the coat was hanging,, and'while the porter who was working the lift went up to the first floor and back (a matter of a few seconds) the coat disappeared. The portor saw the two men making ,towards the lavatory,, and swore that he_ saw the accused taking tho coat with him. A constable was called in and the accused was questioned, but he denied having taken tho coat. The garment was found hanging up in the lavatory, while a few minutes previously it was hanging up in the corridor. After hearing the evidence the Magistrate said he would enter a conviction and fined the Maori £5.
■ For being found helplessly drunk, in Waring Taylor Street Anthony J. Flanagan was ordered to pay 17s. 6d.- medical expenses, and for committing a breach of his prohibition order he was. fined 10s. John M'Donald, with one previous conviction, was fined 10s., in default i& hours' imprisonment.
