CONCERT AT THE TOWN HALL

m, \ V s , I vers- attl 'Rc«ve programme that, had been arranged for.the concert Which was given in the Concert Chnmoor of the Town Hall on Saturday evening under \ tho auspices of the Wellington .College: Old Girls'.Association in'aid of the cot for the Children's Hospital. The chamber was well filled, and the programme met with .much appreciation. The promoters were fortunate-in having secured Mr. Horace Hunt to play for them, his contribution ■ being the heautiful Lieliestraum" of Litzt, followed by Alfed Hill's "Retrospect" as an oncore number.. Needless to say his contributions wero very much enjoyed. The appearance of Jtiss Christina Townsend, a contralto who made her first bow to a Wellington audience on this occasion, was an investing event of the-evening, her. contribution being "She is Tar From the Land" in the first part of the programme and "A Summer Night". (Goring Thomaa) in the second, for both of which she was encored. Jlisj Townsond will certainly be nn acquisition'to Wellington musical circles, and her further appearances.should ne welcomed. The college orchestra (with outside assistance), under tho baton of' Miss Medley, opened the programme .with a selection from "The Boheminn Girl," followed later by "Heartsease" (Neil Mdret). Mr. Ernest Jones sang tho Prologue from "I Pasrliacci;" followed later by"Ui Provonsa,-' from "La Travinta," receiving ■ encores for • both. A charming number was the duet sung by the Misses Doris and. Marjorie Clarke, "Awako" (Pelissier), for which they were recalled, and Miss Marjorie Clarke, who is the - winnor of the Bristol competition for singing, also 6ang "Break o' Day" (Wilfred Sauii<lerson),j<which was also a greatly appreciated number. Miss Elsie IHck.'a striking little figure in black and scarlet, gave an "Umbrella' Dunce"'very successfully, and the Misses -Florence Churchill. Sheila Neilson, and Mr. A. Stanley WaTwick a Shakespearean recital from "As You Like It." Miss Florence Churchill was the winner of the senior' elocution '(championship, and the performance of the three found muchifavour \vitli the audience. Tho wondoi-ful "Carillon" (Chmmaerts-Elgar), with musical accompaniment played by Miss. Imelda I'amafwas one of tho oufstanding ltemn .of the ovening. An iimuning dialogue, "■Spring Onions," was performed by Mr. and Mrs. Hills,'and a much-enjoyed programme, In which' all the items were encored, was brought to an end by the einging of the-Niitlbh.il Anthem. Miss M'Lean, principal of tho college, was among those who were present, and several "old college girls" assisted with tho distribution of programmes, etc. 'Miss Marjorie "W'illcocks was the lion, secretary for the concert, and Miss Imelda Fama was- a most capable aceompanistu.
