POLICE ADMINISTRATION

, CONFERENCE OF OFFICEBS,

A conference of administration officers of the I'olico Department was held at the offices of the Commissioner of Police yesterday. Superintendents and inspectors from all parts of New Zealand were present. The matters under consideration included tho administration of the Arms Act and of the new Gaming Act. v The Arms Act, which comes into operation on January 1, requires the police to undertake very much extended duties in checking the distributionvand use of firearms. The Gaming Act requires the suppression of tho bookmakers, and has proved already to present administrative difficulties.

The policing of tho residential areas of th(j cities was discussed. The increasing size of the cities nas made supervision of the suburban areas desirable, and it is proposed that motor-bicycles shall be used to come extent for this purpose. Many details of administration received attention.

Tho relation of the Police Department to other branches of tho l'ublio Service was discussed. The police undertake very many duties for other Departments, including the collection of statistics, and an excessive amount of detail work is apt to divert their attention too much from their police duties. The Government Statistician had asked that a meeting of police officers should be held to discuss the matter as it affected his Department.
