CARGO BROACHING ON A STEAMER
INDIAN MEMBERS OF CREW FINED.

In the Lyttolton Magistrate's Court today, before Mr. M'Cnrthy, S.M., four Indtlins, members of the crew of the Bri-tish-India steamer tiaiubada, wcroehni'ged with cargo broaching. Two wore jointly charged with tho theft of two tins of camphorated ice, valued at is., and two were charged separately with stealing two pairs of socks, each valued at -la., the property of the British-India Company, in tho case of the two former, one man was seen to hand the tins to the other, while the socks were found in the possession of the other two. In finding tho accused guilty, His Worship said Hint m tho circumstances ho could not follow the usual rule of inflicting; a term of imprisonment. The men were restricted immigrants, and, in addition, no accommodation could 'bo found for them in the gaol owing to the* difficulty of the caste rule, regarding food. The men received a very low wa?o, 30s. a month. Each would bo fined Ws.
