EMBARGO ON HIDES

FARMERS WANT IT REMOVED. The Dominion Executive of tho Now Zealand Farmers' Union met in Wellington yesterday. Mr, G. W. Leadloy (Dominion president) was in the chair, and the members present wore: Messrs. W. J. Poison (Wanganui). G. \L. Marshall Marton), G. 11. Joll (Hastings), R. Dunn (Oroun). 6. Slieatl (Dunsandel), R. D. Dnxfield (Auckland), W. B. Mathcson (Eketahunn), T. Moss (Pnhintua), and J. A. Macpherson (Oamaru). Among tho mat'ters discussed ■ was the question of the embargo on hides and skins. Tho secretary (Mr. E. C. .Tack) said there was a possibility .that the embargo would 1 bo lifted atl tlie end of the year, but thero was nothing definitely known yet.

On- the motion of Mr. Duxfield it win decided that the Government be asked to lift the embargo. FARM BUTTER Butter sold by tha dairy fuctories for coneumpfion within Now Zealand as sußsldised. to tho extent of 6d. per lb. by the Government, in order that the local consumer may buy it at 2s. 3d. per rsr when tho export value- is 2s. (id. Threepence is required for the cost of handling. Butter made on tho farms fs not subsidised, and the farmers contend that this itt nn injustice to men who are out of reach of dairy factories, since the price obtainable for the farm butter is regulated by the artificially depressed retail price- of factory butter. This matter was mentioned at the meeting of the Dominion Executive of the Farmers' Union, yesterday. The members were not disposed to believe that' much relief could bo given the farmers affected, owing to the impossibility of checking small farm outputs and the wide variation in tho qualty of farm butter. But thev endorsed tho action of tho secretary in having brought the grievance under tho notice of tho Government.
