.- ' f CIVIL SERVICE TOURNAMENT. . ■ ♦? Yesterday promised to. bo tho~best day to one of the -worst Novembers which if has been tic Jot of-bowlers to endure. Up till 3 p.m. the weather - was ideal, but it was much too'bright to last, and 4 o'clock saw ,tho sky overcast, and » little later rain set in. Being St: Andrew's Day and a Civil: Service holiday, It was set aside—as la annually the case—for the Civil Service bowling tournament This annual flxturj: shows, in a rather remarkable way, tho increasing popularity of bowls in the service. Only a year or two ago the Thorndon Club's green was sufficient to ' accommodate the entrants, but so numerous were the teams this year that three greens—Thorndon. Wellington, and Victoria had to bo -requisitioned. The rinks . <ns published already) all turned upiUhe only exception being the Audit Department's rink, which did not play in. the first'round owing to the desire of the ..members to »hnw a last mark of respect to the-'laf Mr.-P. r. Webb. A substitute rink played in it* place, bm the Audit rink picked up the running in the afternoon' (second round). The results were as follow:— First Round. Wellington green—Native beat Land.', 19-12; Post and Telegraph A beat Publin Trust, 13—15; Post and Telegraph B beat Legislature, 21-15; Public Works A-bent Imperial -Government Supplies, 21—-16.■ Thorndon green—Audit (substitutes) beat Public Works B, 15-10; Internal Aflairi beat Insurance, 18-9; Treasury beat Labour, 20—14; Agriculture boat Public Works C, 15—14. Victoria green—Railways beat Printing, 18-17; Education beat Ordnance, 24—18. Second Round. Thorndon grecnr-Audit beat Insurance, 2J—9; Internal Aflairs beat Public Works B, 15—10; Treasury beat Public Works 0, 17—10; Labi-ur beat Agriculture, 19—12. Victoria, green—Railways beat Education, 20—16; Ordnance beat Printing Ofttcc, 18-14. -' The second round games were not con. eluded on the J Wellington green, and the third round had to be postponed. It was decided that the tourney should be continued at 9 a.m. to-morrow (weather permitting). Last year's winners were the representatives of the Government Printing Office, but yesterday the Department's rink was defeated in both the rounds played. During the afternoon tea adjournment at the Wellington Club's green Mr. Jourdain, on behalf of the Civil Service players, thanked the president (Mr. M. A. Carr). and the Wellington Club for the kindness and courtesy which had been extended to them in allowing tho use of the greon. In responding, Mr. Carr said it was a pleasure to hirve tho gentlemen of tho Civil Service on the-green, and he -was sure that such gatherings were beneficial in establishing better relations between the Civil Service and the business men, who comprised the greater number of the members of bowling clubs. He thanked the players for their words or appreciation. ■ Bowlers are reminded that entries for the Dominion Bowling Association's tournamont next month close with the secretary (Mr. 9. Underwood) on December 9.
