THE TURF
NOTES AND COMMENTS Br Glekcoe. The spring meeting of Hie Folding Jockey Club will be opened to-day, and concluded to-morrow. Good acceptances have been received for all the events except the bic handicap, which, strangely enough, has only drawn five horees. The card -will commence with the.Waituna, Hurdles, one mile and three-quar-ters. After his dual success at Trentham Maniahera., v/ho is regarded as an improved horse, should have plenty of sup* porters. Some of his admirers dcclaro that he is a Oup horse. In the Trial Plate, live furlongs and a half, the best known are Merry Queen and Top Dog.' The latter was a place* Better at Levin, and eeemed to be unlucky not to win.
As the truck is likely to be on the dead side, /Red Ribbon. 9st„ mav be favourite in the biff handicap. The chestnut mare goes the distance well, and she showed a return to form by running second to Bagdad at Trentham laat month.
There is n> good-sized field in the Kowhai Hack Handicap, seven furlongs, and the raco* looks very open. Warrawee, 96t. lib., will not lack supporters, and the same applies to All Cerise, 7st. 111b., and Pente, 7st. 21b.
Acre, Bst. 131b., is at' the head of the list in the Flying Handicap. Last year the Fordell representative came out fresh and won both weight-for-age events. Thf* bracketed pair (Miss Gold and Dunedin) may be the best of the others. Nursing Bister has a 161b. penalty, which may decide her owner to keep her in lier box. Amongst the lot in the Fitzroy Hack Flying nothing reads better than Admyra, Bat. 81b., but the issue is open for the Wanganui mare is not too sound, and cannot be given a preparation. If All Ceriße is reserved for this race she would bo hard to beat. Prince Martian is a, likely one amongst the bottom weights. Gloaming will apoear in the Feilding Stakes, for whicfi ?710 Held is not likely to be a very big one, and in the Kiwitea Welter. Raceful, who seems to bo cominc on with racing, may be the best, with Moutoa Ivanova closo up. Owners should note that acceptances for the Woodville meeting close on Thursday, at 8 p.m. A Pre««s Association message from Sydney states that at a sale of racehorses Booster was-pasted in at 1000 guineas.
