The extant of the. explosions at Vergato, which lasted for thirty hours, is unknown. The dis.'rict is a burning volcano and is unapproachable. Depots in which hundreds of tons of picric acid and huge stacks of bombs and shells were stored blew up. One hundred workmen arc missing. Vergato, a town of 1000 inhabitants, was wiped out, and presents the appearance of a war-devastated territory. Railway stations, churches, schools, and factories were wrecked, .and steel girdbrs crashed on the roofs of houses a mile away. Fire brigades nnd troops suffered severe casualties while endeavouring to penetrate the scono of the disaster.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
