A WARNING TO POLICE "PUNTERS"
The Minister of Justice, who is puttins into operation the provisions ot tne Gaming Act against bookmakers, has made it clear that any member of the Police Force betting with bookmakers will lie dismissed, regardless of rank. The law makes bookmaking an unlawful occupation, punishable by a hne of ioW or imprisonment for a period of two years, and it provides substantial penalties also for the offence of betting with bookmakers. Any police officer making a bet will be treated as guilty of an orfenne against the laws be 16 sworn to Ul The 6ole charge brought against persons alleged to be bookmakers under the new Act up to the present time ie against a Christchurch , man, who has elected to be tried by jury. This case, which ie to be heard in Christchurch shortly, will be in some respects a test case, since it will provide an opportunity for legal argument on tho clauses of the Act
