—: • POLICE BUSINESS. < Mr. J. S. Evans, S.M., dealt with the police and maintenance cases in the Magistrate's Court yesterday. Herbert Kainsford, who had.-becn fonnd helplessly drunk, and bad been under mcdical treatment for a fortnight, had a prohibition order issued against him, to be effective. for twelve months. He was ordered to pay 355. medical expenses. Jabez Wooldridge (for whom Mr. C. A. l>. Treadwell appeared) was charged with drunkenness, also with a breach of his prohibition order. Mr. Treadwell said that, «om'e timo ago the defendant met with an accident, and had since suffered from spasms of dizziness. When arrested ho was suffering fromuuch an attack. The police record showed that Wooldridgo had been previously convioted on several occasions. He was convicted, and fined 10s. on each information. Edward M'CafFey was charged with assaulting John Joseph M'Quade in Abol Smith Street, on Saturday afternoon. M'Quade,,was found in a semi-consnious condition, and, on the police appearing M'CafTey ran away, but was caught by' a constable. Tho accused said that on argument occurred in the Royal Tiger Hotel, and M'Quade insisted upon fl(ThtIng. He invited M'OalTc,v outside, ann then, according to the accused's allegation, M'Quade was the aggressor, end accused defended himself. Tho Magistrate said there was no evidence iu to who. was the aggressor, and as there was some doubt on tho matter ho would dismiss the information. Joseph ' George Kearsley was charged with being nn idlo and disorderly person. in that he possessed insufficient lawful means of support. Kearsley was found by a conßta.ble sleeping in a- city reserve, and when Questioned he said ho had no money. In Court he stated that he had been at work, and had some money coming to him. Kearsley was further chargcd with stealing a pair of brass candlesticks from St. Anne's Church. • To this charge he pleaded guilty. He was convicted on both charges, and sentenced to fourteen days' imprisonment. MAINTENANCE' CASES. Thomas Henrv ..Aston, was ordered to contribute 15s. per week In respect of past maintenance of his eight-year-old child. Emily Maud Bell was granted an order of separation from hor husband, Joseph N. Bell, on tho grounds of persiitent cruelty, and failure to maintain.
