Another big instalment of the improvement scheme was visible at the 'i'nkiipumi racecourse to-day, and was much appreciated by the record crowd assembled to witness tho first, day's racing of the Tnkapuna Jockey Club's spring meeting. The weather was dull and threatening, and light rain fell towards the end of the afternoon. The track was in splendid order. 'I'he MelroEO Handicap resulted in a v.o'l-iought finish between Arch Margot, Fcr=st Gold, and Infante, who finished in that order, the winner having a margin of half a length, a neck separating second and lliird. Aircraft was fourth. The Borough Handicap was well won by the imported horse Prince Willonyx. Hathlin shot to the front at the start, nnd led "into the straight. Half-way up t'he straight, Prince AVillonyx came will great dash, and, cutting down all opposition won decisively, with something in hand. SouHerina, coming with n dash at the last, secured second place by halt a length from Armorel, who ran wide. Munus was fourth. Twenty horses lined up tor the Ngataringa Handicap, Hyrax, with Gray on his back, being made a hot favouiite, but ho was never dangerous. Royal Mark led till the turn for home, when Bute Sound, who had been running second, took command, and won comfortably by half a length from Royal Mark, with Miss Ellice third a length and a half away. Gatherer ww fourth. In the Tiri Hurdles' Cymer and Scottish Knight led for tho first half-mile. Tenacious then ranged alongside Cymer, and Scottish Knight fell back Tenacious and Cymer ran stride for stride until the bend for home, when Lupenno joined tho leaders. A great battle up the straight resulted itra win for Liiperino by a head, Tenacious beat'ing Cymer by a' neck for second place. Scottish Knight was fourth. ' Landslide and Lucullan wero the most fancied for the Cheltenham Handicap, but several others were well s«PP°/t«l; Lightning led for the greater part of lino iourney, Landslide getting a had start.
