A NATIONAL HIGHWAY
AUCKLAND TO BLUFF. The proposal to commemorate victory in the Great War by forming a national highway through tho Dominion is o,:uy slowly assuming shape. The general idea, is to ntako .1 concrete road at least 12ftAwide, from Auckland to Bluff, at au estimated, cost of iGO,UCO,<IGO.' Approval ot tho project has been expressed by,the. oouhoil of tho Niiw ZealaadMotor Garage Proprietors' Association at a meeting in Ciiristchurch. Only casual discussion of the matter has so far taken place in Auckland and Wellington. Mr. G. \V. llulohison, secretary to the Good Roads Association of Now Zealand and tho Auckland Automobile Association, stated recently that draft legislation rivaling with the main roads of the Dominion had already been prepared" by tho Government, and it was expected that proposals would bo circulated during the recess so that next session legislation might bo passwl transferring the control of tho main trunk road to a national hoard. Apart altogether from tho question of a memorial motorists regarded Ihe suggested road as an absoluto necessity. While some pcoplo considered (hat memorials should utilitarian there was much in tho proposal to commend it, particularly as each town on the route would Wo the opportunity of eroding 011 tho side of the memorial road its separate memorial for the fallen soldiers of its own district
