A meeting of delegates of local bodies throughout tho Horowhonua, Manawntu, and Rangitikei districts .was held at Sandon this afternoon to discuss fur.Jicr action regarding the linking up of the Main Trunk line between' Marton and Levin. Sir James Wilson presided. Speeches were made by Messrs, W. IT. Field and E. Newman, M.P.'s, urging the connecting link as a work of national importance, • whereas the P«'" lcl j" ston North det-iaflion was not justified. Mr' Field severely criticsed the General Manager of Railways, and referred to him as a "absolute autocrat.' Resolutions were carried reaffirming that the Government should construct iflio Jrn.rton-Tlov.in link ns against the Palmersto'n North deviation nnd arrangements were made for a representative deputation to wait on the Premier and the Minister of Public Works when they inspect iho proposed routo.- . The conference was assured of support from the majority of Palmerston North foulness people "who oppose the Palmerston North deviation and local bodies north and west of Marton.
