ITEMS OF INTEREST FROM HOME. The last issue of "Cold Storage," one of the leading London authorities on. the meat trade, las the following items of. interest.— An Irish Meat Epoch. The Irish Packing Company, Ltd., hopes to market its first shipment of fresh meat, killed at its Drogheda works, shortly in the Central Market, Smithheld, whither it will bo conveyed m one ot the two spccinlly equipped cooling steamers ■ owned by the company. 1 lire marks a new era for Irish meat export, the progress of which' the public and trade will, doubtless, watch with much interestFrozen Meat "Bate" Ended. ' The British Incorporated Society of Meat Importers, as n result of a con-
ference on the subject, has sent cablegrams to Australasia stating that the trade here had decided' to abolish the custom of "bate" allowance. I his old allowance to buyers luis, in the past, been granted to cover loss m cutting up and turn of 6calo, ruling as follows;—81b. on. everv five Australian or American sheep; 2lb. on every New Zealand sheep; lib. on every lamb; and 2 or 31b... on every beef quarter according to wrapper. Meat Shortage in Ceylon. With the present price of 1 rupeo per lb. for "stringy" mutton at Colombo, an excellent opening should exist for an enterprising firm to export meat to Ceylon. During the first three months of i ll is year 10,090 goats and 3940 sheep were imported from India, principally lor slaughtering, and in addition 19131b. of mutton, valued at 1.131 rupees, were imported from Australia. Profitable Sheep Farming in Patagonia. La Sooiedad Bxplotadora de Terra del Fuego, of Valparaiso and Punta Arenl.s, Tyhicll is probably the largest sheep farmin" concern in tho world, and with a capital of .01.800,000, controls 2^3.17,083 acres of land, in its last year's working realised a total profit of .£2,721,917. and dividends totalling i' 1,980,000. or 110 per
cent, wero paid. The price per head received for the 991,717 sheep sold for meat was 17s. 7d. in 191G-17, 17s. Old. in 1917-18, and 20s. IOJd. in 1918-19. Extension-of Argentine's Trade. The outlook for the Argentine's cold storage industry has probably never been better than it is now. Before the war foreign ment vws ancithoniii in France, Italy, Spain, and Belgium (to s.iv nothing of other countries), but they may be regarded as permanent customers, seeing that their Government! have expended largo sums of money oil the erection of warehouses in many oi; their ports for the storago of irozen ineuhs.
