ST. JOSEPH'S ORPHANAGE

Sir,—Mr.'Pethericfc, in your issue yesterday morning, asks we for the date ot the. Charitable Aid Committee meeting, the report of which appeared in tho "Hutt Valley Independent" ot July 10. The date of that meeting is 110 concern of mine. When and where he uttered the words is absolutely immaterial to me. ILis appreciation of the work of the orphanage appeared on July 10 4in tue "Hutt Valley Independent." It is a public registered paper. As no contradiction was made, nor any apology offered to him by the paper up to the time of_ the bazaar, I was surely justified in looking upon his speech as correctly reported, and it gave me very great pleasure to have his reputed words inserted in the "Bazaar Programme." I again repeat that this a matter to bo thrashed out now between himself and file "Hutt Valley Independent," and I for one shall look forward with great interest to their controversy, even if Mr. Petherick did not utter the words attributed to hiin. I have an absolutely free conscience on the matter, as no public denial had been made by him up to the time I put the bazaar programme into print. Hence 110 apology will ba made bv me.-*-I am, etc., P. J. SMYTH, Cllairmah'St. Joseph's Orphanage Bazaar. 10 Guilford Terrace, Wellington. November 20, 1920. /
