FERRY STEAMER SHORT OF STEAM
Br Telofrrapli—Prei! Astoelatlon. Christchurch, November 4. The ferry steamer Waliine, with over 500 passengers, feft Wellington for Lyttelton at 7.50 last night. Moderate wea.ther was experienced by the vessel dur- : ing the night, tbij wind being moderate .westerly to nor'-westerly. The barometer at one timet read as low as 28.90, and consequently when the vessel ran into the ' south-westerly gale at 5.30 this morning off Cheviot it was not unexpected. ; Slio arrived opposite the mol/js at Lyttelton at nearly 8 o'clock, ■ but' the wind got .the. ves-sel broadside on, and Captain ; Edwin found it advisable, in view of the ■ scarcity of steam owing to the pobT quality of tho. coal bfeing used, to go astern. ■ When opposite Diamond Harbour' the f anchor was cast and the services of the tug asked for. The tug soon want to her assistance, and the vessel was berthed at 8.45. The services of the tug would not have been . required but _ for the poor quality of the coal, which would not give, the steam required. The Moana also made use of the tug to bring her inside the inner harbour.
