GOVERNMENT HOUSING SCHEME
THREE VESSELS CHARTERED FOR CARRIAGE OF TIMBER YARD ESTABLISHED AT MIRAMAR In order to facilitate the work of the Housing Branch of the Labour Department, the Government has chartered throe sailing vessels for the carriage of timber from tho West Coast and from tho lav .North. Tho vessels will carry' the-timber to Wellington and other' ports cloa> to whero houses aro beine erected. ■
A Government timber yard, in charge! of an expert has been established nt Miramar, whore the timber will be classed' and stacked, and whenco it will be dietribut'ed to the various jobs as required. Tho Housing Branch has organised ita forces as far as the supply of timber 1 is concerned, and now that transport facilities have been arranged the work' of constructing tho houses is expected to; go ahoad steadily. This week several j shipments of timber will' bo aiming from j tho West Coast and North Auckland, audi the vessels will proceed to Miramar wharf' direct ib discharge. ' Difficulty in obtaining adequate. Bup< j plies of coniont is interfering with the! progress of work on the concrete houses that aro being erected at Miramar. It. is s:fatod that- the shortage is due partly to the fact that insufficient', bags aro avail- '■ a'ble for bagging the cement on arrival, in Wellington. So acute has been the cement shortage that the contractors hare not been able to make arrangements for even a couple of day 6 ahead, but it 1« anticipated that the tirouble will be al« leviated somewhat by utilising one of the chartered vessels for running occasional trips between Golden Bay nnd Miramar with comenfl cargoes. Three of tho Miramar' houses are now occupied, and a fourth will bo ready for occupation either to-morrow or on Friday. On each of the contracts there are houses which ar» nearly ccmpleted, aud in five or six weeks' time six houses of the larger design should bo out of _ tho contractors' hands. To ensure rapid completion of the houses inoro carpenters are urgoutly required, for at the proscnt time there is an absolute dearth' of these tradesmen at Miramar. '■ i Tho contractor for the erection of 77 houses at Pupamii, Christohurch, is making good progress with his jobs, but he is in need of more timber, and arrangements havo been made to forward him supplies diroo'i from the West Const. At Hawera. 12 houses aro just, about completed, and cisht at Now Plymouth ore almost finished.
