JUVENILE COURT

BIRCHING FOR A YOUNG THIEF. Mr. F. K. Hunt, 8.M., presided over ft sitting of the Juvenile Court on Saturday morning. A lad, 13 years of age, was charged with the theft of Zcwt.'coul (value 65.), the property of the Union S.S. Co. .The lad was seen by Detective Tricklebani; trundling; a handcart hied with coal; he was stopped and questioned, when he said he got the coal from near the Railway Wharf. Th 3 detective said he had previously warned the lad on two occasions to keep away from the wharf. The Probation Oilicor (Mr. J. Dinocn) said it <ould be necessary to keep n strict eye on tho lad. The Magistrate adjourned the case for six months, and in tho meanwhile the lad is to bo placed under the supervision of the Probation Officer. Mr. 0. B. O'Donnell appeared for tho boy. Two youths, just under 16 vcars of age, wcro charged with the theft of £10 in money, the property of John S. M*Nicol, nlso with tho theft of 12 sacks (valua 155.). the property of Barber and Co. Both pleaded guilty to tho theft of money, but maintained that the amount stolen was £4, and not £10. The facts were stated to bo that they .went to M'Nicol's Blnp at Island Bay for soft drinks, and at a Buitable opportunity one lad abstracted tho money, and Bliarcil fT. with his ma*a. On tho second chargo one pleaded guilty, and the other nqt guilty. The latter had been employed bv Barber and Co., ;-nd his mate came to tho shop and took away tho Racks from the stable. Tt was alleged that the lad employed by Barber and Co. was present whon the sacks were taken away. The Magistrate raid that on the evidence he could not convict the lad who had ploadel not gi'ilty to the thoft of the sacks. Tn respect to Ihifi lad It was stated that he. had been. • boy until ho had associated with the other.
