THE STELLA MISHAP The mishap to the steamer Stella on licr last votbeo from Wellington to Dunedm is not as serious as was at first anticipated. A few rivets were started in a plate amidships the enitinc-room. which caused an inflow of water. The flooded area, however, was .confined to the stokehold bv tho watcrtieht bulkheads which separate that part of the vessel from the rest of the ship. On Wednesday evcnin E the vessel was makine very little water, the leak b"''iir temporarily stopped. It is not yet n jided whether a ecncral averauo will be struck. A preliminary inquiry was held on Wednesday morning, the evidence taken at which v. ill bo forwarded to tho Marine Department for its decision.

GOSSIP. Mr. P. Manderson has joined the Alexander as third engineer. Mr. D. H. Cameron, seventh engineer of tho Maori, has left that vessel, and Mr. L. Sunley has joined in his stead. Mr. O. M'Lcod. second officer of the Wahine. siened off last week and came to Wellineton for Instructions. He was relieved by Mr. F. Oollins. late of the Karori. Mr. H. Young joined the Karori ns second officer in succession to Mr. Collins.
Captain Braldwood has returned to Lyttelton, after holiday leave, to rejoin the Calm. Captain Robertson, who waß in charre in the meantime, will reßunie command ol the' Storm, relievinc: Captain H'Lachlan, v/ho clll ko on his auntial holiday.
