PIA PIA SETTLEMENT

SOLDIERS MUST PAY FOR FLOOD PROTECTION. Flooding at the Pia Pia Settlement, which is ocoupicd by returned soldiers, was mentioned in thei House of Representatives by Mr. G. Mitchell (Wellington South), who stated that the settlers had been flooded nine times since they took up the land. M The Minister of ujnuls (Mr. Guthrie) replied that the mo'n had gone on the •land with their eyes' open. They had got n particularly good bargain, and they could work the land to advantage even in time of flood. Arrangements had been made for the examination of the land, but he could 6ay at once that the Government would not accept liability foi the improvement of the land. The land had been bought at a low value, and the settlement would have to bear the cosi of any works that were undertaken.
