NEW STREETS ON WATERFRONT
NAMED AFTER. NAVIGATOKS
At Wednesday's meeting of the Harbour Board, it was decided to name the", new streets that are being laid out on the Te Aro reclamation, between the old railway station reserve and the waterfront. The first street name mentioned on the proposal of the Engineeer (Mr. Marchbanks) was Chaffers Street, the road thai, will encompass the destruc'iii and corporation yard block on the south and . west sides, taking off from Clyde Quay near tho morgue. Tho name iommemorates the memory of Captain Cliaf- . fers fafl.er whom • Chaffers' Passage of the Heads is named), who commanded the ship Tory (of the New Zealand Land Company 8 chartered fleet). Luring theweek from Soptember 22 to September 1831 V, Captain Chaffers collected valuable /data respeoting the charting of Wellington Harbour, the entrance, and coastline in the vicinity,.
The second suggestion was that tne short street between Cable Street and tho waterfront (near Fletcher Bros', ynrd) be named Barnett- Street, niter Captain J\ Barnett, who made a tough.chart of Wellington Harbour in 1821!, and who, it is recorded, was master of the cutter Lambton, which accompanied the Rosaima.
The third street was named Herd Street, after Captain Herd, of the Rofanna, which entored the harbour in If} 26. This vossel brought the first 60 settlora from England, and camo to Wellington via Stewart Island and Queen Charlotte Sound. Herd Street .will connect ChnfForj, Street with the entranco to the Clyde Quay Wharf, a block away from, but parallel 10, the waterfront. \ Ihe board congratulated the engineer -jon the appropriate names ho had selected for the now streets, and adopted tho recommendations
It should be mentioned bv way of further elucidation of the position of the above new streets that Chaffers and Herd Streets, with Clyde Quay, cut off the old and new Citv Corporation area from the rest of the board's blocks The northern alignment of tho western leg of Chaffers Street divides . the present morgue in two, indicating that when that street is constructed to its full width (68ft.) the morgue will have to k cone away with.
Mr. R. A, Wright mentioned _ that a commercial man had pointed out to him that it was doubtful if the hoard, in providing chain-wide streets only, was looking far enough into the ' future. Could it not be conceived that such streeb; so. close to the waterfront would, with the growth of' tho port and city, become congested?
Tlio chairman (Mr. J. G. Harknessi said that all the sections facing thest sheets had been dealt with—had- ljcen leased, some of them, to the City Corjwration. The engineer (Mr. M&rchbanke) eaid that it was doubtful if these short streets would ever he congested as thoj frould not be utilised much for through traffic. They were streets leading up from the waterfront to the mail streets only. ' Mr. M. Cohen was of the opinion that the heard should lay it down as a policy that all such streets should, for the future, he not less than a chain and a » half in width.
