When the House of Commons was in Committee on the financial clauses of the Home Eule Bill, Sir Worthington Evans introduced a Government amendment to authorise payments from the Consolidated Fund to the proposed, two Irish Parliaments, and said the scheme provided for Ireland contributing eighteen millions for two years towards the Imperial services, made up of JJIO.OSO.OfIO from the Southern Parliament and the remainder from the Northern. A joint Exchequer Board could within a period reduce the contribution or vary the proportions. • Tho amount proposed was moderate, as Ireland's expenditure was <£26,250,0«). The revenue anticipated was i>45,500,000.
Sir Donald Maclean characterised tlia proposal as farcical, and said it should be dropped as regards Southern Ireland. Sir Edward Carson said that, while he thought the Ulster contribution too high, they wore anxious to bear their full share of Imperial taxation, and would accept tho Government proposal.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. TERRORIST POLICY IN ENGLAND URGED BY SOME REPUBLICANS. (Rec Octoher 25, 0.10 a.m.) London, October 24. The "Sunday Times" states that some in the Irish Republican Army consider that murder and violence ere proceeding too slowly, and urge their comrades to carry out a terrorist policy in England. Letters addressed to people of all ranks predict terrible happenings. It has even been stated that numbers of gunmen have already arrived. The desperadoes are well known. Any expedition planned by them to leave their Irish haunts would give Scotland Yard a welcome opportunity of arresting them.—Aus.-N Z. Cable Assn. ATTACKS ON SOLDIERY AND POLICE (Rec. October 28, 5.5 p.m.) London, October 22. A large force of armed men atacked a military motor at Innishannon. Two of the military wor'o killed and three wounded.—Aiis.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Rec. October 24, 5.5 p.m.) London, October 23. A police party was ambushed near Athlone, and ono was killed' and three were wounded.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. (Ecc. October 24, 11.5 p.m.) v-, London, October 23. Sixty Sinn Feiners ambushed motor lorries belonging to the Essex Regiment at Ballinhassig. An officer and two men were killed' and several seriously wounded. Several shops were afterwards looted as reprisals, and two were burned. The police saved those adjoining and prevented {further incendiarism.
Constable Watkins was ambushed nnd killed at Midleton. His • widow has been awarded Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
