MUNICIPAL HOUSES

A SUCCESSFUL BALLOT FOUR MORE PROPERTIES ! DISPOSED OF ! There was lively competition for the . latest batch of four houses, erected at Northland by the City Council in prosecution of its housing scheme. Thirty-one applications were received, but some of the applicants put in for all four houses. Thrt number ot applicants was taken as indicating that the increased prices of the properties was not a deterrent. The result of the ballot was as follows:— No. I.—Sccti'"' 7, five rooms, price ■£1025, Mr. C Mulaiiey. No. 2.—Sc;' 8, fne rooms, price .C 1720, Mr. C. Chambers. No. 3.—Sect 9, five rooms, price ' X 1430, Mr. C. i Bullock No. 4.—Section 13, four rooni6, price • ■ X 1505, Mr. A. Shaw. There were seven applicants for No 1, five for No. 2, fourteen for No. 3, and five for No. i. The reason for the comparatively low cost of house No 3, was that it was built with timber purchased before the latest ir.creasa in prices. The sections on which the houses are built have frontages of 40ft. and depths ranging from 130 ft. to 160 ft. The mini- . mum deposit is .£SO, and no buyer is allowed to pay more than within J250 of the total price, in order that the property may not be traded in for a period , of five years. He may then pay the balance, secure the deeds, and deal with the .property as he thinks fit. Yesterday morning the Mayor and members of the council, with the City Engineer and Town Clerk, paid a. visit of inspection to the houses. They were : miite satisfied with the- style of house, the lay-out, and the prospect that the sites commanded. They also expressed themselves as pleased with the work their officers were carrying out nt Northland The tenants of the first lot of houses sold by th? council also expressed themselves as fully satisfied with their bargains. Thero are four more houses now in course of erection, but these will be a • little less elaborate as to deign and [ fittings, in order to Ijring their cost ' more within the reach of people with j moderate incomes.
