TRAGEDY AT PALMERSTON
RETURNED SOLDIER SHOOTS ' HIMSELF. By Telegraph-8-Decial Correspondent. Palmerston North, October 19. Residents of Balmerston North received quite a shook when it became known that Arthur Joseph Best, a son of the lata Joseph Best, of a well-known N>lson family, bad shot himself. He had been a representative footballer and went to the war with thle Fifth Reinforcements, bring badly wounded in the Suvla Bay action. After returning to New Zealand he'resided, with his brother Harold at Kairangn. He had ton away looking for a farm to 5/ettle on, and had decided upon a property at Ashhurst. At 7 o'clock this morning he returned to his brother's home, apparently in the best of health and spirits. At 9.15. however, a noise as if from the discharge of a gwi waslfeu'd in his brdrooin. On his sister going to investigate she found him.lying dead, with a -portion of the top of his head blown off, and a doublebarrelled shotgun lying by his side, with , one barrel discharged. His action is auitw inexplicable, as he was to have teen married tt> a young Palmerston lady to-morrow. An inquest will be held.
