James Albert North were charged that at the .Avondalo imps on October 2 they, stole M belonging to Harry. Hayr,. part owner of. the totalisator.. Evidence was given that Quinn wa lxr at the 10s. window, aud North was stamper for Quinu on tho day in question. Quinn was asked "if his ' cash was correot, and replied "Yes." He denied having given a'man no change , from a .£5 note tendered in payment for two lfe. tickets. North was sitting close to Quinn when the latter was questioned,, but did not speak. Detective-Sergeant Ward gave evidence of haying obtained two 10s. tickets from J«orth. He tendered.a .£5 note and waited for change, but none was tendered, and witness walked away. The trap was set i for Quinn owing to complaints. l Quinn subsequently stated' that, tho person who tendered the .£5 note walked away without his change, a-nd that be (Quinn) paid 42 to his mate, the stamper, and' handed the -.£5, note over to Everton, the pay-out clerk. They had to pay all shortages, and lie paid £1 over to his mate to hold. North admitted haying got M from Quinn. He said he paid >£2_ back to Quinn. Detective Quinn corroborated Detective Wards evidence. William Jfander deposed to having complained to a. detective that od the second day of the races, he paid .£1 to Oninn for a 10s. ticket, and got no change. • The accused reserved their defence, and were committed for trial, on bail at .£25, with one surety of .£25.'
