RACING PERMITS

« COUNCIL OF CHURCHES OPPOSES INCREASE. By Teleerapb—Press Assoeiatlon. Christchurch, October 18. At a meeting of tho Council of Churches to-night the following motion was carried:—"(l) That, in view of the serious social and economic evils inflicted on the community by the number of totalisator permits already in existence, this Council of views with alarm tis' fact that by a, majority of more than two to one Parliament voted for the second reading of a Bill to increase the number by 38; (2) this council further tenders its hearty thanks to those' members of Parliament, led by Messrs. Isitt and M'Combs, who opposed the Bill with such pluck and determination as to necessitate its withdrawal at the committee stage j (3) as the Prime Minister, in substitution for the Bill, has proposed to set up a Royal Commission to deal with the question of the number and distribution of racing permits, the council further urges that any suggested increase by such commission should be stoutly resisted, as being a scandalous reflection on the need, emphaehsted by the Prime Minister himself, for increasing thrift and productiveness."
