MASTER AND APPRENTICE BILL
The following resolution was carried unanimously at a recent meeting of tho Trades' Council: "That this council unreservedly condemns the so-called Master and Apprentice Amendment Bill (No. 2) ns- being a measure to make boy slavery legal, and express the opinion, that such legislation will make tho Tery nanio of New Zealand a by-word and a reproach -wherever freedom is valued." The seoretary was instructed to send a copy of the Bill to England, and to direct special attention to the fact that it provides for taking boys from their parents without the consent of. the parents, and for the punishment of the boys by imprisonment in addition to the forfeiture of wages, and that undor the principal Act a boy may be sent to prison for three months for misbehaviour while tho maximum penalty for am employer is a .£lO fine.
