CITY TRAM FARES

SHOW JJP WELL IN COMPARISON,

"While the people of Wellington are getting a little restive nbout increased charges for the trams, and tho council ,nas been as careful as possible in developing its policy in connection with the running of the trams, the public must feel a good deal of satisfaction that, notwithstanding all the conditions we have had to contend with, when we compare the running of. tho trams with some of the overseas services we are no worse off than many others," said tho Hayoi [Mr. J. P. Luke) at last night's meeting of the City Council. His Worship continued that the London County Council was applying for authority' to increase its tram fares, and under its proposed schedule passengers would bj carried three-fifths of a mile for a penny. In 1917 the London body's penny section, was two miles. The proposed charges represented an increase of practically 300 per cent. In Wellington the increases had been 100 per cent, for the one-section ride, 50 per cent, for two sections, 33 per cent, for three sections, and no increase in the case of four sections. He thought tho council ought to feel encouraged in that it had been able to "face the music" in such a successful mnnncr. Possibly, however, il things did not improve, the council might have to consider Hie whole matter again. Opportunity was also taken by the Mayor (o pay a tribute to Hit conductors in the matter of the collection of fares' in crowded cars. "Tbev are." he 6.iid, "carrying out their duties with considerable difficulty, and it i'„ almost humanly impossible for them to collect all their fares unless the publit, assist them to a certain extent." |
