THE BY-ELECTION
NOMINATIONS CLOSE TO-DAY. The nominations for the two vacancies on tho City Council caused by the resignations yf Messrs. J. 0. Shorland and L. M'Kenzie close at noon to-day with tho. acting-chief returning officer (Mr. Arthur Ames). A fresh supplementary roll of district electois has 'been prepared for the election and will contain over 5000 new, names, additional to those used in tho recent by-clection (when Mr. W. J. Gaudin was elected in place of the lato llr. George Frost), but that roll will not he printed until it is ofertain- there is to be an election, which" is not at all a foregone conclusion. ' So far the only nominations received are those of the two ex-eoimcillors who resigned. Mr. Shorland has been nominated by Messrs. T. M. Donovan, J. P. Shand, and W. J. Gaudin, and Mr. M'Jfenzie's nominators are Messrs. T. M. Donovan, Lance A. George, and T. W. Rowe. ■-
