! ASSAULTING A POLICE OFFICER. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., presided at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday. . ' A labourer named Frederick Smith was charged with being found drunk, with assaulting Sergeant J. W. M'Holrn, and with using obscene language in Vivian Street. Smith was arrested for drunkenness, and while being escorted through Vivian Street he struck tho sergeant a blow in tho eye and used the bad language. For assaulting the polico officer he was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, the Magistrate remarking that he would not tolerate assaults on police officers. For using obscene language Smith was sentenced to 14 days' imprisonment, the terms to be concurrent. For drunkenness ,Jie was fined ss. Joseph Lynch, while helplessly drunk, fell in the street and cut his head, necessitating medical attention. Yesterday he was charged with drunkenness, fined ss„ and ordered to pay 21s. medical expenses. Elizabeth Kiiminster, a- married woman, was charged with drunkenness (her fourth oflenee), also with committing a breach of her prohibition order, to which she pleaded guilty. Her husband 6aid that he intended to take her out of Wellington, and on tho strength of this she was convicted and ordered to come up for sentence when called upon. Edward J. Garvey, with one previous conviction, was fined 20s. For failing to comply with the terms of 1 a maintenance order in favour of his wife, tho arrears on September 17 totalling £147 : 10s., Arthur Blackett was sentenced to three months' imprisonment, the warrant to bo suspended so long as he cays 30s. a week off the arrears.
