CHARGES AGAINST SEAMEN POLICE AND CIVIL BUSINESS Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., dealt with the police business in the .Magistrate's Court yesterday. liiichten Eraser, a member of the crew of the Canadian Prospector, who appeared in his jhirtsleeves, pleaded guilty to being absent from the ship without leave. Mr. J. Jiaule, who appeared for tho shipowners, had little information inspecting the cose, and none of tho oHieeis could say how long tho man had been absent. Under the circumstances the Magistrate ordered him to bo returned to the vessel. Felix If. Barrett -and Gerald Thomas Silk were charged with using threatening behaviour in Cuba Street on Monday afternoon. Apparently there had been an argument in a hotel and the settlement was effected in the street, by Barrett knocking'' down Silk, and Silk returning the compliment. Tho I Magistrate lined the men 20s. each, and Barrett was fiued a further ss. for drunkenness.
A youth, James Logie, who was convicted on Saturday of the theft of six dozen spoons, value £o Bs., the property of W. M. Eannotyne and Co., Ltd., was presented for sentence. The probation officer (Mr. T. I'. Mills) said that Logie was only 18 years of age and had borne a good character. Ho recommended that .Logie be placed on probation. Tho Magistrate said llmt he had intended passing a sentence of 14 days' imprisonment, but in view of the probation officer's report he would place Logie on probation for a period of twelve month?. He advised the prol>ation officer to make the conditions severe. Daniel I'ellW, another member of the crcw of the Canadian Prospector, pleaded snilty to wilfully disobpving the lawful commands-of the muster of the, Vessel. ' Mr. J. Manle. who appeared for the shipowners:, strted that the master had had considerable difficulty with the crenv and in the interests of discipline on - the ship it was urged that ..the'mail should be punished. _ Pellow was sentenced to two days' imprisonment. It was stated that, after the sale the animal became ill, and was destroyed as nil act of mercy. The defendant' declared that the animal was of no value. The Magistrate held that, .the, defendant had exceeded his rights in destroying the animal, but reduced the value to J!5 and gave judgment for •that amount, with costs £3 7s. 4d.

Jl.Sievwright) against' Mills and Arkerj carriers, I'anoma Street (Mr. N. ; Johnson), 'to•recover 412, dam-, hires-■■ causcl, to a lhotor-cyclc hy a runaway horse belonging to the defendants. Tlie plaintiff claimed an additional £7 by way of general damages.'; The defence was that the damage was the result of a pure, accident. The Jlagistr'aFe, after hearing the evidence, ' gave judgment for plaintiff for .610, with costs. .
