THE COMPETITIONS

DAY OF LARGE ATTENDANCES SOME EFFECTIVE PIANO SOLOS Tho Wellington Competitions were advanced a further stage yesterday, there boing large attendances at all sessions. Tho evening programme was excellent. One of tho outstanding features- was tho pianoforte playing of the "Andante and ltondo Capriccioso" (Mendelssohn), which was delicately treated by the three recalled performers. Mr. G. Mackay's rendering was splendid, and he thoroughly deserved his win. Had his embouchouro work been better, Mr. Gibbons's playing of "Trovatore" would have been a very fine example of flute solo work, but cap.able execution was marred by faulty holding of hia instrument, with the reisulb that "fuzzincss" of tone pervaded most of his rendering. In the recital "Waltz Quadrille," Miss Florence 'Churchill, who has done consistent work 'throughout the competitions, lost marks fby allowing her' voice to become tired. Again the tenor performances were nob I up to standard, and only a second prize I was awarded by Mr. Harold Gregson. Far superior to the previous comedietta ("A Domestic Episode") was "The Burglar," a clever skit which was most popular.
