AT THE FOOT OF THE WHARF
ENTHUSIASTIC CROWDS. After tho address of welcome tad been read at the wharf by tho chairman of tho Harbour Board, the Vice-Regal party, followed by tho military officers and officials, proceeded to the. wharf gates, where His Excellency was 'met by tho Mayor of Wellington (Mr. .1. P.-Luke), in full robes of office. A few words of welcome wero spoken-by tho Mayor—the wharves being, as it were, tho enhance to the city-after which tho Mayoress (Mrs. Luke) was presented 1 to Her Excellency Lady Jellicoe. Tho party then proceeded into tho city by motor. The enthusiasm of tho large ci'Qwd that assembled by tho wharf entrance was spontaneous and genuine. Cheer after cheer was raised as tho Governor General motored slowly from the wharf, tho enthusiasm being general. Smiling, his hand raised again and again to a friendly salute, Lord Jellicoo acknowledged the plaudits of the gathering. To the cheering and shouting youngsters in tho crowd, Ms smile was particularly warm. The womenfolk were loud in their expressions of welcome to Lndy Jellicoo and her children, and these she fully appreciated by a happy bow and smile to each group of patriots. As the motor-car bearing Lord and Lady Jellicoo turned tho corner from tho wharf the crowd surged after, still shouting and cheering. Each member of the. Governor-General's retimio met with the same reception, a motor-car occupied by his personal servants being eagerly scrutinised by tho townspeople, to whom tho sight of servants in full livery vow no doubt stmngo. reception at the foot of tho wharf was indicative of the deep regard in which the new Governor-General is hold by the public, whoso impressions were made during his last visit to the Dominion.
