ADDRESS OF WELCOME PRESENTED LORD JELLICOE'S REPLY The Vice-Begal party were then welcomed by the chairman (Mr. J. b. Harness) and members of the officios of the Harbour Board, and Sir. Harkness rend the following address to His Excellency i To the Eight Honourable Viscount Jellicoe of Soapa, G.C.8.. 0.M., G.C.V.0., Admiral of the Fleet, ■ Governor-General . Elect and Commander-in-Chief of the Dominion of New Zealand l and its Dependencies: Muv it please Your Lordship,— ; We the Chairman and members of ' the "Wellington Harbour Board,. as loyal subjects of His Most Gracious Majesty King George V, desire to congratulate , you on your safe arrival in New Zealand. A3 representatives of the maritime and commercial interests of the port, we extend to Your Lordship a most cordial welcomo to Wellington, and desire to' assure you of our deep appreciation of the high honour conferred on this Dominion by your appointment as Governor-General. In the person of Your Lordship wo recognise the strength and efficiency I of the British Navy, which throughout the Great War stood like a rock, • akainst our enemies and saved the Empire. , Your supreme services will, be remembered while history lasts, and we rejoice that you have been chosen to be His Majesty's representative in this our Dominion, and we Hope and believe that your vico-
royalty will result in lasting benefit alike to New Zealand and the MotherWith sincere wishes for the health and welfare of yourself, Lady Jellicoe. and family, and trusting that you mav have a pleasant sojourn m this Dominion of New Zealand, We have the honour to be, on behalf of the board, Your Lordship s • obedient servants. .(Sgd.) ' In a few supplementary remarks, Mr. Harkness remarked: "We feel highly honoured that you are to take the high and honourable position of GovernorGeneral of this Dominion of New Zealand. The high position you have occupied but lately in the history of our nation, and the distinguished services you have rendered to the Empire, make us look to you with confidence as one who will bo.of great assistance to us in settling and keeping up the defences of this Dominion. May I also say this: your ripe experience, your knowledge of men, will be helpful in the. stressful vears which are, perhaps, yet,to come,' and we look to you for any guiding assistance which, as representative of the King, you may be able to give."
