MIRAMAR & AMALGAMATION
AN EARLY MERGER DESIRED. is a feeling in Miramar Borough, amongst those who favoured amalgamation at the recent poll, that no unnecessary time should mo wasted in connection with giving full effect to the ratepayers' decision, whilst others are inclined to be more deliberate in bringing about a consummation of the opinion expressed at the poll. So far no dato has been fixed for amalgamation. One of tire difficulties may bo representation of the Miramar Borough on the City Council. It has bean suggested that such a difficulty might 1m overcome if all save the Mayor and two councillors wore to resign, leaving the three left to represent the new district on the council until the end of the municipal year.. If the final step were brought about without some such arrangement all the present members of the Miramar Borough Council would bo entitled to sit on the City Council until April nest, which would givp Miramar a disproportionate representation whioh would scarcely make foT smooth working conditions on the council The parties who wish to see vthe merger tako effect cannot contemplate waiting until tho end of the civic year (the last Wednesday in April next), before tho ratepayers' wishes are given effect to, and would like to see the merger take place as from September 30 (the end of m> half-yearly period). Consulted on the point, tho Major (Mr. J P. Luke) said that ho would like to see Miramar come in as soon as it could be arranged, but decidedly not. if it meant that tho present council(seven In number) were to take their scats on the City Council, as this would throw that body out of balance Mr. Luke wid that be had expressed that view to Mr. Stone (Mayor of Miramax), and had suited to Trim that, as a formality all ive three should resign, and jo pavo the way to on early merger of the city with the borough. In the case of thJ Karon Borough, its council decided *n te tliree members who were to take lh«r nlnoo on tho Cty Council, and tl.oso K members would retain the.r scats until tho next general election in Apul.
