In glorious weather, and beforo about 7000 people, the Wellington t°u l 'l n SA ea JL met ancf defeated the Canterbury fifteen Wi> to-dav by 16 points to 13. llio matcn was a good one to watch, the pace heme on from start to finish. Canterbury as a aide played well together, but. there weic no star performers in the fifteen. Curn mines und Hasell were tho pick of tho forwards, whilst Ford and 11''Cormick wero the most conspicuous in the backs. Again the Wellington team showed noticeable signs of stateness, especially so iu the backs, most of whom found it strenuous ■to make a run. All, however, worked together well in passing rushes, but as good as the rushes may have been they Jacked the sting that was evident earlier in the season. To tho forwards must be gnen great credit. Canterbury, with 25 minutes goue, had run up 13 Points-a bi„ hurdle for any team to overtake, but the Wellington vanguard played the game ot their lives in the second spell, and this won the game. , For the number of knock-outs the game was remarkable, though tho contest was very clean right throughout. First, Fitzgerald (Canterbury) had to leave tho field, and a couplo of minutes later H. tucholls was carried oil with a, badly kicked leg. W< O'Sullivan next seriously hurt his wrist, and tho game had no sooner been started again, when M'Leod (Canterbury! also retired. .Just near timo JlCabe, who roplaccd O'Sullivan, broke a bone in lus ankle and retired. The bell then went, but there was still another-Jlahn having to be carried oil as a result of a kick. The teams were:— Wellington.—Brook, 0 Sullivan, ltyan, Christopherson, M. Nicholls, Roberts, H. Nicholls, Calcinai, Standen, _ Hughes, Hark- ; ness,' Wilson, Pearce, Malin, J. Shearer. Canterbury.—Evans, Ford, Wilson, M Lcod, Fitzgerald. M'Cormick, Sandman, Carnegie, Hasell, Munro, Henderson, Cumnungs, Jackson, M'Leary. , Wellington won the toss, and from tho kick-oil Canterbury went to the attack, but Malin cleared at a critical juncture. Back came the home team, but a certain try was lost them by on-side play. The free-kick went out at half-way, and here tho Canterbury backs got going, and the ball wont out to M'Leod, who raced across far out. Tho kick failed. Canterbury 3, Wellington nil: The home team were playing with more dash than their opponents, and near Half-way a passing rush was started, which ended in Hasell scoring. He was also successful with the kick, B—o. Wellington began to "attack, and from half-way Itoberts just failed to l&nd a goal from a mark, Half-way was tho scene of play for a while, but a home passing bout, which found all the Wellington backs out "of position, ended in Ford scoring. M'Ltod converted; 13—0. Malin, by good, work, took play to tho Canterbury twenty-fiv<»; and J(. Nicholls went on on his own, but he lost the bull.Regaining it iu a flash, ho went across near tho posts. Roberts added the major points; 13—5. Wellington were now playing with more confidence, jind Canterbury had to defend hard?" A "good kick by Evanß .sent tho visitors back to half-way, and in this region from a free, M. Nicholls landed a beautiful goal; 13—8. From now till half-time the only incident was a passing rush that Just failed to see O'Sullivan What wind had been blowing swung round when tho teams went on for the second spell, and Wellington again had to face it. Itoberts and his backs threw the ball about, and three times in succession Wellington were unlucky not to score. Subsequently Hughes followed up last, ami, heating Ford badly, scored. M. Nicliolls's kick hit the post; 13—11. At this stage Fitzgerald retired hurt, his place being taken by O'Malley. Good work by Roberts anil Wilson, and pretty line-kicking by Brook, put Canterbury on the defensive, and from a loose rush Calcinai picked up and broke away.. He passed to Harkness, who scored an easy try. M. Nicholls converted; 13—16. A few moments later, H. Nicholls, in collaring M'Lood, injured his leg, and soon afterwards O'Sullivan. went oil. In a melee near half-way M'Leod sustained a head injury, and left the field. M'Cabe, who had replaced O'Sullivan, next luado a good run, but he was collared near the line, a bone In his aukle being broken. The bell now went with play in midficld, but there was still another casualty, Malin having to bo carried oil. Mr. B. Watson (Dunedin) was refereo. • TEAM RETURN HOME REVIEW OF THE TOUli. By the Wahine, which arrived from Lyttelton yesterday, morning, returned tho Wellington touring team, and what a sorry sight they presented! There was hardly one fit man in the team, bandages and plaster being evident everywhere. Though they failed to bring back the Ranfurly Shield, the team were in good spirits, and all wero of on# opinion; that Southland deserved their win on the game they played laßt Wednesday. A prominent member of the team who 1 was interviewed said that in future only tho number of matches set down in tho Ranfurly Shield regulations (six) should be played "Take this season, for instance. The shield had been: defended on ton occasions, and on the eleventh, wo lost. Without detracting from the merit of Southland's win, I givo it as my opinion that if they, had met us earlier in the season a different tale would have beon told. The Wellington team is stnlein fact, stale is no word for the way members feel. It is hard work for most of them to run, whilst the majority of the nlavers nro so knocked about that they think twico beforo going low." Hospitality was everywhere shown to the team, and in this direction the Canterbury Union excelled. i As an appreciation of tho efforts made on their behalf the team at Christchurch on Saturday presented their maunger, Mr. yf F llornlg, with a case of pipes.
