SUBURBS RIFLE CLUB
PRESENTATION OP PRIZES. The annual smoke concert and presentation of prizes in connection with the Wellington Suburbs Defence Riflo Club took place in Dustin's rooms, Cuba Street, on Friday, and passed off very successfully. President W. E. Fellingham was in the chair, and lie was supported by the Mayor (Mr. J. P, Luke, C.M.G.), Colonel R. J. Collins, and Major H. T. Marshall (president of tho New Zealand Rifle Association). Colonel Collins proposed the toast of the "New Zealand Riffe Association," and in responding 1 President Marshall stated lie considered the proposal to separate rifle clubs from the Defence system a very ill-advised move. Personally, lie lioi>ed the Government would lay down such conditions for the encouragement of rifle shooting that would induce exmembers of the New Expeditionary Force to join the ranks of the clubs. (Applause.) Passing on, Major Marshall emphasised that the rifle clubs must encourage junior shot?, and to this end he suggested that the most promising Senior Cadets should, be taken in hand by tho clubs, and allowed to participate in the weekly competitions. In proposing the toast of "Defence" the Mayor said ho was very pleased to note that the Government was going to strengthen very materially the opportunitoes of rifle clubs to associate with any system of defence that was laid down. (Applause.) He hoped that tho rifle clubs would continue to be a strong unit in connection with any schemo for homo defence. The toast of "The Club Champion" was proposed by Mr.' H. _Boon, and responded to by the champion, Mr. R. C. Barkle. / "Kindred Clubs" were toasted bv Presidents H. T. Marshall, R. Flaws, and J. Rabe. Ditriiy the evening an acceptable entertainment programme was provided, and tho trophies won during the past season wero presented by Mr. Luke.
