RETURNED SOLDIERS' BALL

SUCCESSFUL GATHERING.

Very complete arrangements had been mailtt to-sceuro tho success of the fourth nnniinl ball of tho 'Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association, which was held iu the Town Hall last evening. Although not so crowded as the one which was held last year, there was a largo attewfanco of dancers, and the hall was & thoroughly enjoyable one in every way. A feature of tho decorations, which wero verv effeefwe, was the quantity of inoat beautiful flowers which had been .sent in, and which decorated both tho large hall and th"e Concert Chamber. The front of the stage in tho .former place was banked with narcissi, and they also decorated tome of the alcoves, each*.of which was named after a tattle or a part of the campaign in which the New Zealand soldiers had served. Festoons of coloured drapery decorated the outside of the gallery, and blue streamers at wide intervals were carried from the central electrolier to the-sides of .the chamber, a contrasting note being givon by narrow widths of scarlet and blue -ribbons, which were also used for docorative purposes, -large .-yellow shades covered the lights, and the whole effect was very gay and varied in character. Primroses, jonquils, and daffodils, to 6ay nothing of violets, were arranged upon tho tables.in the supper room, their (rrouping being chaTming, while the long buffet which ran down the centre of the room, with its large silver centre-pieces and bowls filled with narcissi, was a special feature of.the decorative scheme. The front of the stage was also arranged with them and with pot plants and foliage. Cowley's orchestra supplied excellent music for the dancing, and the Caledonian Pipe Band ' played inspiriting music for the Schottische, with DrumMajor Hamish Grant Duncan and PipeMajor T. A. MDonald in control. Among those who were present were Their Excellencies the Acting-Governor-General. Sir Robert Stout and Lady Stout, the latter wearing a gown of soft lavender-coloured charmeuse draped with ninon, and corsage trimmed with lace; Mrs..W. F. Massey, in shot ardethyst silk trimmed with black beaded net; Mr. W. Perry (president of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association), with Mrs."Perry, who wore black charmeuse trimmed with jet and cream lace" veiled with black; the Mavor (Mr. J. P. Luke, C.M.G., M.P.). the Mayoress, in black satin, trimmed with touches of grene; Mrs. T. Dyer, in "black charmeuse and ninon, with jet trimmings; Mrs. Harper, also in black, with . swathed corsage of floral silk; Mrs. C. Brown, in black charmeuse, trimmed with jet and touches of white; Miss Massey, roso pink net over silver tissue; Miss Brown, rose pink eliarnieuse and tulle; Mrs. Boden, black satin and jet; Mrs. Moore, grey silk, with beaded net; Mrs. Pres-' ton, amethyst silk, with lace trimming; Miss Dyer, rose pink satin and tulle; Mrs. Ea'dcliffe, dark blue silk; Miss Sievwright, pale blue charmeuse, with touches of silver; Miss Speed, black satin, with touches of white; Mrs. Hyams, black charmeuse and tulle; Miss Stott, palest pink charmeuse and tulle; Mrs. Robert Bell, silver embroidered lace, with draped overdress of pade blue silk; Mrs. G. F. Wilson, primrose coloured broche; Mrs. Vivian Horton, white net; Mrs. Aldrich, black-silk, draped with net; Miss Cock, floral silk trimmed . with lace; Miss ' M/Nab (Marlborough), black charmeuse, trimmed with beaded net; Miss Dick, floral silk; Miss Mack, black tulle; Mis. Prince, black charmeuse, draped with •silver lace; also Colonel Hugkrs. Sir Arthur Grindley, Dr. Arnold Izard, Messrs. Harper, Curtayne, Sievwright, F. Dyer, Bell, Aldrich, Batten. Horton, Wilson, and Captain -W. J. Hardham, V.C. The committee responsible for the arrangements of the ball comprised Mesdames Boden, Preston, Harper, Hyams, Stott, Perry, MTSwan, Radcliffe, Moore, Mj« Massey. Miss Dyer, Miss Sievwright, Colonel J. G. Hughes, C.M.G., D.5.0., Messrs. Maxwell, Kilgour, Wilson, Simm. Curtayne, Perry, Hardham, Johnson, Sievwright, Pnscoe, and Aldrich (secretary and treasurer). Although there were, it was said, more returned soldiers present; on this occasion than at the last ball uniforms were conspicuous by their absence, most of them wearing the ordinary'civilian dress. ■'•.:-..■

P'D C.E. Bro. W. "W. Clarke thanked the visitors for their attendance, and extended an invitation to attend Court Epuni on September 23, when a memorial to fallen members will be unveiled. On Thursday evening an interesting talk on tho care of tho teeth iras given in tho Y.W.C.A. Chbroom by Mr. Denniston to an interested audience of girls. These talks, which have been arranged bv the T.W.C.A. Educational Department, and given by;leaduip local exports, are veiy.helpM to the girls, m thw set before them the ideal of striving to attain a sound body and a sound mind, In connection with the Mayoress s children's fancy.dress ball, te.be held on October 2. for the Citizens' Day Nurseries supper tables, in addition ,to the list mentioned elsewhere being taken by Iftdy Stout. Mrs. 1 D. Eiddiford, and Mrs, T. E. Wallace. "',',. Mrs- P. Dransfield 1 has returned to Pahiatua from a visit to Hawko s Bay.
