COMPREHENSIVE SCHEME OF IMPROVEMENT.
Councillor P. Eraser, at last night's meeting of the City Council, advocated a comprehensive sche-mo for tho improvement of To Aro ilat. He point-cd out that large buildings were bciiip; erected in soino streets which might hitvo to bo widened in the future, when tho council misjht be cnlk'il upon to pay a considerable amount in compensation. If by a littlo foresight tho council could obviate- tho payment of such claims it was obviously its duty to do so. The Mayor said that what tho council wanted was authority to put n proclamation over such sireols which it required to widen (from ond to end) ea that when people wished to build they would havo to build back to tho now argument. Then the council would only need to pay for tho land so acquired. If such authority could be obtained it would safeguard tho council. A report was being brought down by tho engineer on the whole proposition. Councillor IFKon&io thought that th» time was ripo to stir the Government up about the new railway station proposal. Councillor Wright, M.P., said that tho Qovornment would bo stirred up when the Eailway Estimates oamo bsx fore the House,
