« The' monthly meeting of tho Petone District .High School Committee was held last evening, tho chairman (Mr. D. M'Kenzie) presiding. Tho headmaster's report Bhowed that the numbers on the roll at the secondary department wero:— Boys, 24; girls, 21; attendance, boys, 21; girls, 18; primary department, boys, 379: girls; 366; attendance, boys, 343: girlß, 313. Mr. Klrlt said he -would like to hear discussed the advißabloucss or otherwise of linking up with the Wellington Schoil Committees' Association. The association was a live body, asserted the speaker, mid was doing good work He moved that tho committee associato itself with the organisation. The proposal was favourably received bv the meeting, and, after discussion, tho Motion, which was seconded by Mr. E. Trogear. was carried. 'On the motion of tho chairman, tho following three resolutions were carried: (1) "That in the election of memberß for education boards, the franchise be extended to adults on tho same lines as municipalities. The present method docs not voico tho wish of tho people, being merely confined to a few school committeemen. Tho nublic want a broader franchise, tho pTeeent voting power for members of education boards being inBatiafaotory." '21 "That tho Qovernraont in all its Departments show by example and bring In legislation and encourage outside employers to give time off during workinjr hours to their employees for advancement in thoory and practice in their work at the various educational institutions. Tho instruction should be by day and not by night." (3) "That free school books bo given to tho State primary school children. Failing that, will tho Government supply to parents all school books and requisites at tho lowest possible cost?"
