A Sydney messnge states that police, evidence given at the Licenses Reduction Court shows that drinking in hotels by women has grown largely in recent years, and is increasing. The Premier of New South Wales has announced that a Bill is being drafted to place a tax on race tickets, as follows: —'Paddock, 3s\ 24; Leger stand, -10d.; outer gate, 2d.; ladies' tickets, 2s. 6d. Mr. R. Wright, a Manchester engineer, and brother of the Archbishop of Sydney, is a passenger.on the longest commercial flight attempted from London to Bucharest. He reached Vienna in twenty-four hours. ' ' A message from Sydney states that progress returns on the vote of members of the Presbyterian, Congregational, and Methodist churches on the question of union indicate that a strong affirmative decision may foe expected in all three churches on the prepared basis. Jn the Federal House of Eepreseutatives, Mr. W. M. Hughes moved the second reading of the New Guinea Bill, providing for the acceptance of the mandate._ and the establishment of a civil Administration to replace the military control which has been in force since 1914. The debate was adjourned. A message from Tokio states that a hundred nobles and prominent citizens met at' the residence of the Premier and organised a Japanese League of Nations Society, with Prince Tokugawa as President, and Viscount Shibusawa as VicePresident. Overseas delegates to the . Imperial Congress of Chamlrers of Commerce, which is to open in Toronto on September 18, are arriving by each incoming steamer. A hundred delegates landed in Quebec on September 13, and many are assembling in Montreal and Toronto. A Router message from London sihtes that a report the Ministry of Health contains startling revelations, and especially pillories egg and custard powders. Analysts declare thati generally eggpowder is coloured baking-powder, and custard-powder is coloured and flavoured starch without a trace of any eggs. Speakers at the annual convention of the Institute of American Meat Packers pointed out that tho big. packers in the United States are facing a eerious meat shortage, caused by the growing disinclination of farmers to raise cattle owing to the high costs.' Tho institute hopes to devise means for remedying the shortage. Mr. H. W. Clapp, who has been appointed chairman of the Victorian Railway Commissioners at a salary of .£SOOO a year, has arrived from America, where he relinquished the post of vice-presi-dent of tho St. Louis Railway Company. Ho was lwrn in Melbourne, and commenced life as an engineering apprentice in South Melbourne.
