MR, HUGHES IN CONFLICT WITH COUNTRY PARTY.
' Melbourne, September 11... Mr W. M. Hughes, Federal. Prime Minister, fell foul of the Country -Party in the House of Representatives and gavo a display of temper which may possibly lead to future complications. Mr M'Williams, the Country Party lender, objected to the-expenditure of half a million on a Queensland timber enterprise without consulting Parliament. Mr. Hughes bitterly attacked Mr. ilAJ.illiiims, accusing him of covering the Ministerial benches. Ho sjiil.Mr M Williams had allied himself withJMr. Ryan, whom Dr. Mannix had described as the greatest Sinn Feiner of all. Mr Grcorv, Deputy-lender of tho Country Party, and a. former Minister, admonished Mr. Hughes, and theatened, irrespective of the issue and the consequences, that his vote would go to depose him at tho earliest opportunity it bo ever repeated his conduct. •V. voto was thereupon taken on the extension of the debate as a test of the feeling of the House, and resulted in the Government winning by 29 votes to a. The Country and Labour parties voted together.—Press Assn.
