PRODUCERS AND THE EMPIRE
Sir,—lt is a coincidence that tho sums paid under tho commandeer to dato on frozen lueat and greasy wool each approximate fifty millions sterling, while tho slipe wool amounts to ,£7,423,51 M ana shcopskins to ,£3,058,691, or a grand total '■> of .£112,114,513 paid to tho New Zealand grazier.
This is indeed a formidaMo 6um, but when it is remembered that the English and Scottish farmers refused to come under the commandeer and sold their wool and skins in tho open market at nil estimated advance of 125 to 150 per ecnt. over the prices paid to the New Zealander, it is competent to assess the sum the Imperial Government would have had to pay for these commodities, based upon London market prices at tho time of realisation, At the lesser percentage of 125 per com., tho sum saved by tho Imperial Government on the product of our flocks alone and gifted by our graziers over the amounts contributed by his compatriots in England and Scotland towards the conduct of the war, is no less than ono hundred and forty millions sterling, and this is not all standing to the credit of the primary producer hero, as we must add the contributions of tha dairymen, _ which I compute at about twenty millions, thus bringing up tho grand total to tho startling sum of ono hundred and 6ixty millions sterling saved by the Imperial Government through tho patriotic liberality of the New' Zealand grazier nnd dairy farmer.—l am, etc., PRIMARY PRODUCER.
