SUBMARINE MISHAP

The crew of the American submnrino So, 'which met with an accident off tlio Delaware- River, was rescued. The Navy Department has received a.i interesting account of the accident. The submarine made a dive in IGS feot of wator. A largo valve in the air-lank failed to close, and admitted a large quantity of water to the living spaces, and the boat went to the bottom. The crow closed the vnlvo and expelled tlio water, whereupon the stern lifted above the water and the bow remained at the bottom. The storage-batteries gave out fumes, and tlio crew began to drill a hole. The nir was very foul. The steamship Atlantus, twenty-five hours later, saw tho stem of the submarine, and a shirt was seen waving through the hole. Tho Atlantus pumped air into the submarine, and sent out wireless messages. Another stenm ship stood by, and its engineer worked for eight hours with n hand tool, and cut a hole largo enough to release the crew, who were suffering from the effects of the bad air.—Aus.N.Z.
